Sidika is the story of Saka family and their young daughter Sidika who live in a poor neighborhood of Istanbul. Sidika was not allowed to go to high school, raised to wait her husband-to-be at her fathers home, not even allowed to leave their house on her own. But she educated herself through books, newspapers and TV. She approaches her life, half-witted older brother, oppressive and alcoholic father and traditionalist mother in a satirical and fun manner along with the current political and sociological events of Turkey and the world. She gazes the world through her window as she hungers for all the intellectual accumulation of the universe.
In this film that wavers unsteadily between a comedy and a tragedy, Murtaza (Mujdat Gezen) is a deluded security guard whose fanatical reverence for "duty" verges on the psychotic. He is incapable of seeing himself for what he is -- and as a consequence he is often the unwitting and unknowing brunt of jokes. His wife and daughters are painfully aware of his shortcomings, but they generally suffer in silence. One of the daughters ends up working in the factory to help the family out financially, and when Murtaza finds her sleeping on the job one night he hits her so hard she eventually dies from the blow. Zebercet is an obsessive man living a monotonous life in a hotel with few customers. This monotonous life changes with the arrival of a woman who does not even give her name. She stays only one night in the room she has rented and leaves the hotel to come back a week later.
A peasant woman who cannot bear children for her husband agrees to take in a concubine as a result of pressure from her community and finds the concubine herself. The new woman is also unable to bear children. However, the first woman becomes pregnant in the meantime. The jealous concubine slanders her, and the villagers tie the woman they call a "whore" to a tree to kill her. Her husband arrives in time to rescue her, and they leave the village.
