Each of the short stories is based on either one or several stories by a wonderful Russian writer. The heroes are ordinary people “of the people”, contemporaries of Shukshin, all of whose life’s ups and downs are inextricably linked with their country - the Soviet Union of the 60s-70s. The main thing that unites both the works themselves and the films made is a whole gallery of the brightest images and characters, a story about such different destinies and differently meaningful lives, a story in the center of which is invariably Man, with his love, quests, weaknesses and victories.

The director Aleksei Saltykov well known for his film The Chairman with Mikhail Ulyanov, an acclaimed Russian actor playing a main character. All Costs Paid is one of the first Soviet feature films that shows the war in Afghanistan. Film has unusually truthful point of view on that period of Soviet Era and on the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

In this farcical dark comedy/melodrama, Lena manages to lose her place at college by virtue of throwing a minor hissy-fit when she catches her erstwhile boyfriend in bed with another girl. Instead of penalizing the boy for his behavior, Lena gets stuck with a court appearance and must pay a small fine, in addition to losing a boyfriend, her college career, and an apartment. Lena belongs to a film club which occasionally hands out awards, and the membership of it decides to send her into the Russian hinterlands to hand out an award to an obscure filmmaker. Throughout the film, Lena has been associated with a bizarre con man named Stepanych who, when his cons fall through, comes to her in the distant town she has gone to seeking her help in committing suicide.

Yuras, a young man who has served eight years for a minor crime, is released from prison. He finds himself in his village, already in independent Ukraine. On the radio is heard a voice of the first president, who promises Ukrainians the right to a dignified life, and young people in clubs "dance non-Moscow, independent rock 'n' roll". The young man is trying to fit into a new picture of the world, even starting a relationship with a Latvian girl. The smell of freedom and international friendship wafts through the air. Dreamy and full of hope for a new life, Yuras is returned to earth by the executive service of the police, which acts as a long-standing and well-established repressive mechanism.

Soviet army was one the worst for human dignity places to be. The task of the army was to turn freethinkers into normal dumb Soviet people. An intelligent Ukrainian guy refuses to obey.

In the small seaside town of Chioggia, the wives, fiancées, and sisters of the fishermen wait for the men's return from the sea, passing the time with gossip and teasing each other. A bit of flirtation, a bit of rivalry, and from these sparks, instantly fanned by the gossiping women, the flames of jealousy and resentment flare up in the passionate southern personalities. The happiness of two young couples crumbles. The familiar bickering of the neighbors, their constant amusement, reaches a fever pitch of irreconcilable hostility.
