Inspired by Carl Maria von Weber's Der FreischĂŒtz, the film opera Hunter's Bride traces the romantic rivalry between two veterans of the Napoleonic Wars who each vie for the heart of the same woman.
Hunter's Bride

The legendary director Ruth Berghaus created this staging of Carl Maria von Weberâs Der FreischĂŒtz as a gripping theatrical experience for the Zurich Opera in 1993. Its revival in 1999 was a roaring success. With sets by Hartmut Meyer and costumes by Marie-Louise Strandt, Berghausâ staging avoids the local peasant colour conventionally associated with Weberâs opera. Chorus and orchestra of the Zurich Opera House are conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, universally celebrated for the structural transparency of his interpretations, his intellectual penetration and his emotional understanding of both music and opera plot. And last but not least an all-star cast made this production a highly memorable event: the dramatic soprano Inga Nielsen as Agathe, one of her best roles, the Swedish soprano Malin Hartelius as Ănnchen, the sought-after Heldentenor Peter Seiffert, who gives a convincing passionate Max, and many others.

Der FreischĂŒtz

A troubled marksman, desperate to secure love and status, turns to forbidden magic in a rural community ruled by superstition and ritual. This stark television adaptation strips Weberâs Romantic opera of spectacle, recasting it as a bleak folk-horror parable about fear, failure, and the cost of choosing certainty over conscience.
Der FreischĂŒtz
This unique production of Carl Maria von Weberâs âDer FreischĂŒtzâ was created to celebrate both the pieceâs 200th premiere anniversary at Konzerthaus Berlin and the 200th anniversary of the famed concert hall itself. For this production, Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus â internationally acclaimed for its avant-garde opera â created a virtual forest in the Konzerthausâ Great Hall.
