This loosely plotted coming-of-age tale follows the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he stumbles his way over the burgeoning swell of adolescence in 1950s France. After having his first sexual experience with a prostitute and dodging the lips of a priest, Chevalier contracts a case of scarlet fever. When the fever leaves him with a heart murmur, Chevalier is placed in a sanatorium, along with his over-attentive and adulterous mother.

Parisian everyman Antoine Doinel has married his sweetheart Christine Darbon, and the newlyweds have set up a cozy domestic life of selling flowers and giving violin lessons while Antoine fitfully works on his long-gestating novel. As Christine becomes pregnant with the couple's first child, Antoine finds himself enraptured with a young Japanese beauty. The complications change the course of their relationship forever.

The young artist Wanda Leibovitz comes to Paris, hoping to forget unfortunate love. Wanda doesn't know yet that this room will change all her life shortly after it slightly opens a mysterious forbidden door.

Old Léon lives an hour outside Paris, in the company of one of his daughters, his son-in-law and his granddaughter. The latter agrees to take him to see his paralyzed cousin Adolphe in a Paris hospice. He takes the opportunity to visit his first wife, trying to get news of his daughter Louise, who is dead but whom he prefers to believe is alive. Charlie Pattison, a wealthy American, lands at Athens airport, where he has just received an emergency phone call from his friend Maurice. The two men met in prison camps and have vowed to track down a certain Nazi doctor, Hermann Geiss, a connoisseur of masterpieces who is guilty of criminal experiments on prisoners. But Maurice doesn't show up. As soon as he arrives, Charlie investigates his friend's disappearance. He ends up meeting a painting dealer, Cardin, whose client Geiss is said to have been.

An old man moves into a pension after leaving his house to his son. One day, his son picks him up and takes him to an old house, where he can enjoy the last good moments of life.
