Produced by low-budget entrepreneur Phil Goldstone, this silent action melodrama starred Richard Talmadge, a German-born former stunt double for Douglas Fairbanks.Talmadge played Bruce Randall, a wealthy young man supposedly killed during a robbery in his home. But Bruce has survived and is instead wandering about in a state of amnesia.

Samuel Butters breaks his engagement with Belle Bright—a strict ranch owner—to marry Violet White after falling for her at a summer hotel. Despite Belle withholding his investment money and threatening foreclosure on his struggling, family-filled new home, the twins' charm changes her heart.

After a prologue where we are shown the backgrounds of Wilhelm II and Woodrow Wilson, we see the story of Conrad Le Brett from Alsace-Lorraine. Forced to fight for Germany Conrad, sees soldiers taking girls into a church to rape them and kills one who murders a baby. Shot in the encounter he is taken to a Brussels hospital run by nurse Edith Cavell where he falls in love with American nurse, Amy Gordon. After Edith Cavell assassination and the murder of Conrad’s sister Vilma by the evil Lieutenant Ober Conrad honors her dying request that he go to America and defend Alsace-Lorraine's reputation. Once there he convinces President Wilson that Alsatians should be allowed to enlist. Fighting with the "doughboys," Conrad kills Ober, and after the armistice, returns to Amy.

Sylvia Landis promises to marry the wealthy but unprincipled Quarrier because of his social standing. Avarice is the only emotion that Sylvia feels towards her fiance, and when she meets Stephen Siward, a young man afflicted with alcoholism, she falls in love.

There is distress in the West household after young Dr. West disappears mysteriously, causing his mother to notify the police, who assign the search to Detective Rhombus. The cause of all this excitement resides in the Parker apartment on the floor above where the doctor has gone to call on his sweetheart Kitty. She is in a dither because her father has decreed that she marry Gus Woozle, the pickle king. Dr. West and Kitty are planning to elope, but when her father returns unexpectedly, Kitty hides her lover in the boudoir. Parker tells his daughter that he has sent for Alderman Smiggles to officiate at her wedding and, to prevent any deviation in his plans, locks Kitty in her bedroom. Soon after, the detective arrives and arrests both Woozle and Parker for the doctor's disappearance. In their absence, Alderman Smiggles arrives and marries Kitty to the doctor.

Paul Andrews returns from the World War with Buddy, a dog he found in Europe. Instead of getting a warm welcome, he finds his sweetheart, Caroline Blair, missing.

Orphaned sisters Kate and Irene are separated as children, but each keeps half of their mother's wedding ring. Years later Irene marries John West, the head of a munitions camp. Kate, as fate would have it, happens to run the saloon in the camp and she and Irene become friends, but neither has any idea that the other is her long-lost sister. Matters take a turn for the worse, however, when Kate starts a romance with Cliff, Irene's adopted brother--a relationship that Irene strongly disapproves of. Complications ensue.

Captain Markham charters the boat of the evil Captain Blackton to search for a treasure he once buried on a South Sea island. Accompanying him are his daughter, Lois, and first mate Steve Maitland. They arrive at the island in time to witness a native ceremony of choosing the Fire Bride for sacrifice to the gods. Blackton accompanies Markham to the island to search for the gold, kills him when they find it, and reports to Lois and Steve that they were attacked by natives. Blackton goes ashore to bury Markham but incurs the natives' wrath when he dishonors Atel, the Fire Bride. Steve warns Blackton but, when he learns that the villain caused the death of his sister, helps the natives subdue him.

A wealthy minister in a mining town is something of an advocate for the miners' safety, but he doesn't really get involved in the issue. He is soon snapped out of that attitude, however, when his daughter is trapped underground in a mine explosion, along with the mine's owner.

Tom inherits a million and buys the hotel to continue his experimental management, which is to give the employees time and opportunity for self-expression--to do what they like best to do.

Released from prison on parole, the "Gas-Pipe Kid" returns to his home in the slums to find his mother dead and his father evicted. He is arrested for beating up the landlord but escapes with the help of Ida Hunt, his sweetheart. Years later he is a baseball star known as Bat Shugrue and is widely idolized by boys who read about his clean living,

Scruff Mackenzie, arriving at his quarters in the Yukon, announces his intentions of seeking a wife. Later, he meets Father Roubeau and his Indian ward, Chook-Ra, whom Scruff comes to love, but the priest forbids their marriage until the arrival of her father, Chief Tinner. When Scruff goes to a nearby town to buy gifts for Chook-Ra, he becomes infatuated with a dance hall girl.

When chorus girl Nell Gordon (Madlaine Traverse) is betrayed by a married man, she becomes hard and bitter. Eventually, she drifts from New York to the decadent Western town of Gehenna where she's the star of the cabaret.
