Europe in second half of 16th century was very rough place to live. Peasants of Slovenia and Croatia had even rougher times because of the constant threat of Turk raids and being taxed to death in order to provide defence against the Turks. The monastery "St. Panteleimon" in Nerezi is a masterpiece of medieval, not only Macedonian but also Byzantine architecture. Its main features are the harmonious forms, the mastery of its builders, the polychrome facade of stone and brick, as well as the skillfully made domes. The painting, on the other hand, by unknown masters from 1164 represents the apogee of drama, unseen in medieval painting until Nerezi.
