In France during the reign of Louis XVI American naval officer Francis Burnham escapes from a British convict ship. He flees to Paris to see Benjamin Franklin only to find him away. At loose ends he becomes indebted to the Marquis de Tremignon who under threat of imprisonment involves him in an intrigue to compromise the Countess De Villars to force her into marriage. While unwillingly purloining one of her slippers the lady catches him, and they realize he had saved her at one time from highwaymen. After many contretemps, the Marquis is disgraced, and the Countess and Burnham are united.
Malvini, retires to a monastery after his wife elopes with another man. After 20 years, Malvini returns to find his daughter, Valeria, accused of murder. Her lover, Mario, had actually shot the man in self-defense, but the dying victim blamed Valeria. Mario, initially driven insane by the event, recovers and explains what happened. The priest intervenes with the King, Valeria is freed, and Mario is pardoned. The film ends with the priest marrying Valeria and Mario.
On her way to rehearsal, chorus-girl Betty stops to rescue a bird from the clutches of a boy with a bean-shooter. Jim Derwent, son of the theater owner, is passing in his car and sees the girl boxing the boy's ears while her aunt looks about for a policeman, and he stops to see what's wrong. He recognizes Betty, and after explanations, Jim drives them to her home, where the bird is cared for. On her arrival at the theater the stage manager bawls her out and fires her, but Jim gets his dad to countermand the manager's decree. The next day Jim calls, more to see Betty than the bird, and a charming romance is soon underway. After a "night out," the leading lady calls in sick and Betty has the chance to take her place. She makes good, and the former leading lady is deposed. But Betty soon has the opportunity to become Jim's own leading lady, and when he promises to love her pets as well, she becomes his bride.
Author Hilary Farrington and his wife Eloise have been married about a year, and although Hilary loves his wife, he has become engrossed in his writing and doesn't realize how lonely his wife has become. Eloise starts spending time in the company of Darrell McKnight, who neglects his own fiancée, Nora Gail.

Gerrit discovers that, unless she finds a husband, she will be put to death, and he agrees to marry her. They return to Java Head, the Ammidon family home in Salem, Massachusetts, but Gerrit's "homecoming" has some unexpected consequences.
