A doctor's research into the roots of evil turns him into a hideous depraved fiend.

Gerrit Ammidon, despairing of any chance to marry his love, Nettie Vollar, because of a bitter feud between his father and her grandfather, sails to China to "get away from it all". While in Shanghai he rescues a beautiful young woman being attacked by a gang of street toughs. She turns out to be Taou Yuen, a Manchu princess. Gerrit discovers that, unless she finds a husband, she will be put to death, and he agrees to marry her. They return to Java Head, the Ammidon family home in Salem, Massachusetts, but Gerrit's "homecoming" has some unexpected consequences.

A young actress seeks an engagement in New York but faces obstacles due to jealousy and politics. Her wealthy broker finances a production, demanding her best role. She resists, then moves to Denver for a stock engagement and falls in love with a newspaper writer.

Irving Lawrence owns some of the most decrepit tenements in town and is an all-around bad guy. He won't cooperate with the efforts of his wife, Barbara, to help the poor and sees other women behind her back. Muriel, one of his cast-offs, meets and marries Barbara's brother, Payne. Lawrence makes trouble for Muriel and fabricates a scandal involving his kindly brother Schuyler and Barbara.

Malvini, retires to a monastery after his wife elopes with another man. After 20 years, Malvini returns to find his daughter, Valeria, accused of murder. Her lover, Mario, had actually shot the man in self-defense, but the dying victim blamed Valeria. Mario, initially driven insane by the event, recovers and explains what happened. The priest intervenes with the King, Valeria is freed, and Mario is pardoned. The film ends with the priest marrying Valeria and Mario.

Two young people, Betty Browne and Billy, are set to inherit money if they marry, but each imagines the other as a rough cowboy and refuses; by chance, they end up on the same train with their chaperones (Miss Prim and Bunny), leading to mistaken identities, romantic confusion (as Bunny and Miss Prim fall for each other too!), and a hilarious mix-up before they finally discover each other's true identities at a station and fall in love for real.

Two vaudeville performers, Steve Jenks and Stella Triplight, receive urgent bookings in different towns but find themselves with each other's trunks due to a mix-up by a baggage agent. To perform, they improvise by wearing the wrong clothes – Steve in Stella's dresses and Stella in Steve's suits – and unexpectedly become huge hits, leading them to team up, share their wardrobe, and find romance after discovering their shared success and loneliness.

In France during the reign of Louis XVI American naval officer Francis Burnham escapes from a British convict ship. He flees to Paris to see Benjamin Franklin only to find him away. At loose ends he becomes indebted to the Marquis de Tremignon who under threat of imprisonment involves him in an intrigue to compromise the Countess De Villars to force her into marriage. While unwillingly purloining one of her slippers the lady catches him, and they realize he had saved her at one time from highwaymen. After many contretemps, the Marquis is disgraced, and the Countess and Burnham are united.

Geoffrey's relationship with his fiancée is threatened by Ameuset, a princess of Egypt awakened after five thousand years. Originally a six reel feature, only short fragments of The Dust of Egypt survive today.

Betty, the only daughter of Jenkins, a wealthy farmer, is secretly loved by Tom Saunders, a farm hand. Tom's scapegrace brother, Dick, returns from the city and is befriended by Tom. Dick later wins Betty's love. While Jenkins is blasting out a tree stump with dynamite, Betty and Dick are passing close by unnoticed, and the explosion destroys Betty's sight.

Old Silas Blackburn, a wealthy recluse, lives alone with his butler and his ward Katherine. One night, Katherine discovers Silas murdered in the room where three generations of Blackburns have mysteriously died. Silas' grandson Robert, whom Katherine loves, comes to visit the next day, suffering from amnesia.

Rich but frivolous, Cynthia and John Karslake obscure their love for each other by their constant quarreling. Cynthia grows jealous of her husband when, one day at the races, she notices Vida Phillimore, a recent divorcée, flirting with him. Using this incident to inflame all her other petty grievances, Cynthia ends up in divorce court presided over by Vida's ex-husband, Judge Phillip Phillimore.

Olivia Dangerfield and her brother are hired as servants in the household of the meticulous Mrs. Falkner. When another pair of servants is detained by the law, Olivia decides to pose as a master cook, though she knows little about the culinary arts. Meanwhile, Burton Crane, the boyfriend of Mrs. Falkner's daughter, becomes attracted to the "wonderful cook" at the Falkner home.
