American Civil War, 1862. After the disaster of the Second Battle of Bull Run, Major Allen, chief of the Secret Service of the Union, asks actress Gail Loveless to become one of his operators and infiltrate enemy territory.
Michael Cardigan is an American patriot in the months before the American Revolution. He fights to broker a peace deal between settlers and the Cayuga tribe and almost loses his life in the process. Despite the fact that he loves Silver Heels, the ward of the British governor, Michael joins with the famed Minute Men to plot revolution and, he hopes, a free American nation.
About the year 1900 in a midnight raid on the palace of a Balkan king, emissaries of a great power slay the royal pair, and carry off the infant crown princess. The time shifts to the present. Foreign agents steal the plans of a new shell loaned Great Britain by America. Halkett and Gray, English officers, recover the plans; and the foreign agents endeavor to gain possession of them again.
The friends of the story are John Drene, a sculptor, and Jack Graylock, a painter. Both men swear eternal friendship on the night before Drene's marriage.

John Sark is the owner of a piece of land coveted by Henry Murden, leader of the band of "White Riders," who has purloined the information that a railroad wishes to buy the property. Sark is a naturalist and has for an assistant Rose Ember. He discovers one of the rider's masks which is made of one of Rose's handkerchiefs, and this introduces a mysterious element into the love affair. The mask belonged to her father. The riders try to force Sark's hand, but are obliged to capture him. Rose, seeing Sark lead away, dons a mask and riding close to his horse, cuts his bonds. Sark kills Murden, and, finding that his savior was Rose, is once more happy in his love.

In accordance with an Iroquois custom, two women unknown to each other decide to make their babies "hidden children" by giving them to Native American foster-parents until they reach maturity. A boy and a girl are thus raised within the Iroquois community. Upon learning of their true heritage and the custom's purpose, they return to their original people. They are then expected to marry each other to bring a fresh spirit into the tribe.
