Willi and Maria Kluge married in the final days of World War II. Maria is deported to a camp in Siberia and does not return home until eight years later. She brings with her the child of a fellow prisoner, whom she gave birth to in the camp. This is a heavy blow for her husband Willi, who has been waiting longingly for her, but he takes her and the child in. She struggles to regain his love and trust, and eventually his masculine generosity prevails.
In spite of his blustering manner and his refusal to listen to what the patients have to say, Dr. Doppelsieder is highly respected in the Upper Bavarian town of Bayrischzell, because he (almost) always has the right remedy and effective advice ready for the sick. The only person he can't help is Pfundtner, the rich Guldenhof farmer. He wants a remedy that, after seven daughters, will finally help him and his wife to the longed-for farm inheritance.
The story centers on Jonny, who is stranded in the fictional South American republic of Nebrador after being discovered as a stowaway en route to inherit a ranch elsewhere; due to his striking resemblance to Governor Oronta, he is coerced into impersonating the leader to shield him from assassination attempts amid a brewing revolution.
Professor Mauthner, after many years of exile (having emigrated in 1933 to the USA), returns to Germany in 1948. He can in fact return to his teaching post, but the rejection and petty intrigues of his reactionary colleagues and students make his work almost unbearable.
