It's 1957, and James Whale's heyday as the director of "Frankenstein," "Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Invisible Man" is long behind him. Retired and a semi-recluse, he lives his days accompanied only by images from his past. When his dour housekeeper, Hannah, hires a handsome young gardener, the flamboyant director and simple yard man develop an unlikely friendship, which will change them forever.

A boy receives a gift from his grandfather for his birthday; a box in which to store the lessons he will learn throughout life. He inadvertently learns his first lesson when he opens the large chest of his grandfather's own lessons learned.

Desperate to escape their dead-end lives and start anew, a pair of young Brits seek out a rich American uncle only to find themselves lost, penniless and 3000 miles from their intended destination.
