Cashier Ferdyš Pištora goes to rob the villa of banker Rosenštok. At that moment, a fire breaks out and Ferdyš saves the banker's two young children. He is hailed as a hero by everyone and Rosenštok makes him a messenger in the bank. This changes Ferdyš's entire life. He becomes a moralist and bullies the whole neighborhood with his sermons. He falls in love with Terezka, a member of the Salvation Army. Ferdyš's former lover Irma is jealous of Terezka. The two women argue and Terezka, in anger, claims that she killed her child and buried it in the cellar. Ferdyš believes this fabrication. In order to save her, he wants to give her the money that he was supposed to hand over to the bank. Out of jealousy, Irma tells the police that Ferdyš wanted to rob the banker's villa, and Ferdyš is arrested. However, Rosenštok intercedes for him and Ferdyš is acquitted. Terezka confesses that she made up the child's murder and celebrates her wedding with Ferdyš.

In the Prague Old Town and the adjoining streets there is always plenty of life. Housewives shop, beggars arouse sympathy, the Salvation Army tries to put the godless on the road to salvation by hymns and sermons, and Ferdys Pistora hunts in the pockets of his fellow men and isn't even put off by the presence of an officer of the law. Ferdys sets off to burgle villa of the banker Rosenstok, but a fire breaks out in the house and Ferdys ends up saving the banker's two small children. For this he is celebrated as a hero and gets a place as an errand boy with the Rosenstoks. At home he is visited by representatives of the Salvation Army, Captain Kosterka and Terezka, with whom Ferdys instantly falls in love.

Slightly ironic comedy of wretches, who come to understand the rich and are able to accept charity, and also about how love and work prevail over the factory owner's son.

The war drama The Horse Patrol is an adaptation of the play of the same name by writer and military doctor František Langer. It takes place in 1919 in Russia and depicts the conflict between members of the Czechoslovak legions and Soviet agitators who are trying to forcibly integrate the legionnaires into the Red Army. Members of the legionnaire's horse patrol, led by sergeant František Matějka (Z. Štěpánek), befriend the inhabitants of a Russian village, but after a cunning attack they find themselves isolated in a lonely building. They are holding two Russian prisoners, while two of their soldiers have set out to report to their superiors. The horse patrol then loses its horse due to betrayal and must prepare for an unequal battle during a major Red Army attack...

The name day of Mr. Fiala: The husband catches his wife with his friend. In the ensuing argument the husband is insulted and attacked. The lovers believe him to be dead and carry him from the house out into the street. Drunkards find him there and they think they have have killed him. They stand him against a wall with his face in the window of a miser who has just been counting his money. The miser punches the man in the head and takes the "corpse" to river and throws it in.
