Arunachalam, the son of a prominent village elder, discovers the truth about his past.

In the village Ammapatti, Maruthu Pandi is a coracle operator in day and the village protector at night. The villagers give him food in exchange of his work. Maruthu Pandi has a mentally ill sister Lakshmi who is pregnant and he takes care of Lakshmi like a mother. Kanagavalli, a dancer, slowly falls in love with Maruthu Pandi. Kanagavalli is in fact a police officer who wants to arrest Maruthu Pandi. Maruthu Pandi's real name is Manickam, and after a revealed flashback, police team come to Ammapatti to arrest Manickam. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Ragupathy leaves his village for the city and finds a job at a 5-star hotel owned by a man in a relationship with his mother. When his life is threatened, Ragupathy decides to ensure his safety.

The film was launched by C. V. Sridhar in 1980 as a Cinemascope venture and was then titled as Sakthi. Sridhar collaborated with Kamal Haasan after the success of the 1978 film Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, which had also featured Rajinikanth. The film was meant to be the first film which featured Kamal Haasan and Ambika as a lead pair and stills were released featuring Ambika in a swimsuit. The film got delayed and was put on the back burner, before it re-emerged in 1986 under the title of Meendum Suryodayam and shooting progressed. It was planned for an April 1986 release, which got postponed to May 1 of 1986. There was a local authority election in March 1986 and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won seats. In the middle of the 80s, in Madras. While her car, (one Volkswagen Beetle, typify like Walt Disney's "Herbie") breaks down (frequently), Mâlu (Jayashree), a beautiful young graduate, very independent, stemming from the Tamil bourgeoisie, attends, dumbfounded enough, not far from it, in the terrible correction that Raghunath (alias Raghu) (Mogan) to a pickpocket administers. The young man who went to an interview, misses his bus. Having got acquainted with Mâlu and having repaired his vehicle, this one leads him to its meeting. She informs him on the spot, that post, is already taken, what puts Raghu, beside himself. During his interview, he lets burst his anger, he becomes enraged in the face of his future employers, among which one, Rajasekhar (A. R. S.), who is other than the father of Mâlu, who finally, appreciates the frankness of Raghu and commits it on fields.

The movie deals with four friends. Ravichandran, the hero, is the son of a rich man (Veera Raghavan), and he along with his three friends Nagesh, Mali and Murthy, lives in a mansion owned by his father. While they plan to go on a holiday, a young woman (Kanchana) sneaks into the bungalow, fleeing from danger, and begs the hero to offer her solace for two days. He agrees and the trip is cancelled. Kanchanca and Ravichandran fall in love. Another woman (Vijaya Chandrika) suddenly appears one night and leaves her child, Baby Shanthi, with a note claiming that she is Mali’s daughter. Mali asserts that he has never seen the baby before and asserts that he doesn’t know the woman in the letter. But he falls for the child and brings her up with love and affection.

Vinodh manipulates Thulasi into marrying him. Later, he takes away their firstborn child to please Satan by sacrificing it, however, Vijay, a kind man, saves the baby.

After being murdered by her in-laws, a young girl's spirit possesses her favorite doll and seeks revenge.

In a sub-plot, Ramesh's secretary Menaka (Fatafat Jayalakshmi) marries Ravisankar (Vijayakumar), an artist, at nearly the same time. The spouses in each pairing are very different from each other, and have great problems understanding each other. This movie explores whether either pair can make a good marriage together.
