The young Eva Heldmann has inherited a publishing house, which she is running in an exemplary fashion. However, she still has a co-heir, Stefan Gudewill, who is considered a good-for-nothing and who has been missing since he was 18 years old. With the help of a detective, Eva locates Stefan in a small town and goes to pay him off so she can run the publishing house alone. When she finally meets Stefan and gets to know him, she is convinced that he really is a good-for-nothing. But due to his rather swashbuckling style, she falls in love with him against her will. The two come together, but then split after a misunderstanding. Eva leaves, convinced she will never see him again. Yet one day, a new employee from the shipping department comes to her and Eva recognizes that it is Stefan, who wants to work his way up from the bottom to become a worthy partner.

The film The Green Domino is adapted from the 1933 stage play Der Fall Claasen by German dramatist Erich Ebermayer, whose works often examined criminal cases and moral dilemmas. Ebermayer's play, premiered at Vienna's Akademietheater, centers on a mysterious figure linked to a green domino mask during a pivotal event, blending elements of intrigue and personal reckoning.

Silo is a bum; but he's a bum whose beloved by all and one day, he is found wounded on the banks of the Theiss. Fishermen take him back to the village and Maria, Alexander Renka's young wife, cares for him until he gets better. Silo's wound heals, but he decides to stick with the fishermen to find out who the intended target for the stabbing knife really was (for who would stab a beloved bum?). Maria's husband is acting really strange. He is away from home often and can be found very often near the hut of the gypsy Panna, who can allegedly bewitch any man she pleases. Maria is convinced from her womanly intuition -- never mind asking -- that her husband is doing the dirty with the gypsy and decides to abandon him and the town she lives in. With her brother, she returns to her homeland, the steppe. That same morning, Alexander Renka is found dead on the riverbank and he's been stabbed, too.

Fritz Holl owns a plantation in Cameroon. He works hard and, with the help of his wife, Helene, also cares for his sister Anna, who became blind after an accident. Fritz is very concerned about Helene, for his once vivacious wife has become depressed. For a while now, Herbert, Fritz’s younger brother, has been living on the farm. Herbert is no big help to Fritz because he's reclusive and an alcoholic. Herbert Miller, the farm's administrator, is overheard in a bar telling someone that he recently split up with his girlfriend Marianne back in Hamburg. In Hamburg, Marianne Carsten has gotten engaged to Kurt von Kollinghausen. She soon realizes, however, that the arrogant Kurt isn't the man for her and she now wants Herbert back. Her father understands and wants to send her off to Cameroon. While Marianne flies to Cameroon, Herbert takes the ship back to Hamburg because he's going to sell his brother's cocoa crop in Germany.
