Chiquititas is a Brazilian children's musical telenovela co-produced by SBT and Telefe and originally broadcast on SBT from July 28, 1997, to January 19, 2001. Based on the original Argentine telenovela created by Cris Morena, it was adapted for Brazilian television by Ecila Pedroso for the first season and Caio de Andrade for the subsequent seasons. Starring Flávia Monteiro, Fernanda Souza, and a large ensemble cast, the series ran for five seasons and became one of the most successful children's productions in Brazilian television history. The story follows a group of orphaned children living at the Raio de Luz orphanage, where they find love, friendship, and hope under the care of the kind-hearted Carolina "Carol" Correia. The Sabino Machado family, their slaves and entourage spend years frozen in the ocean after a shipwreck in 1886. They wake up gradually, one by one, and must learn to deal with the technology and the human idiosyncrasies of the present times. Among cultural and temporal shocks, "the frozen ones" encounter improbable friendships, romances and greedy people, while fighting prejudices that not even time was able to eradicate.

The main plot revolves around a hidden treasure. The story begins when a gang steals ten million dollars worth of diamonds in Uruguay. To escape the police, one of the thieves, Rodolfo Torres de Almeida, flees to Argentina. His partner, Ivo Simeone, travels to São Paulo with the jewels. Ivo decides to hide the precious stones and, to ensure he doesn't forget the hiding place, has a map tattooed above the buttocks of a girl, the daughter of his neighbor. The thief takes care to photograph the girl so he can identify her in the future. Ivo is arrested and, eight years later, when he gets out of jail, he is run over and killed. Before dying, however, he manages to tell his son Rodrigo the secret about the treasure map. The young man follows the clues given by his father and discovers that the young woman with the tattooed map is Elisa, a novice nun cloistered in a convent, about to take perpetual vows.

The central theme of the soap opera is the struggle for political control in the interior of Bahia between the two most powerful *coronéis* (landowning bosses) of the cocoa region: Sinhô Badaró and Horácio da Silveira. Virgílio, an ambitious lawyer, is summoned to the town by Colonel Horácio but ends up becoming involved with Ester, the colonel's wife. Captain João Magalhães is a card sharp who poses as a military engineer, successfully deceiving the entire town. He falls in love with Sinhô Badaró's daughter, Donana. By the end of the story, he reveals that he had only gotten close to the Badarós out of opportunism. After numerous clashes with Sinhô Badaró, Colonel Horácio secures political power in the town of Ferradas, with the acknowledgment of the local population.
