Dreaming of great adventures and of standing up for his homeland, a young Portuguese man enlists in the army during World War I and is sent to the front line in Mozambique, Africa. Left behind by his platoon, he sets out on a grueling trek across the mystic Makua native land, walking for over a thousand kilometers, in search of his dream.

Sofia, a young girl in Mozambique who is studying to be a doctor, finds that her professor wants more from her than hard work. An unwillingness to compromise her values and potentially her health, may cost her a place there.

Ermelinda, a nurse working at the Maputo Central Hospital finds out she is pregnant and decides to leave her abusive and alcoholic husband, Jerry. On the bus home to get her son Nelito, something happens that puts her decision and humanity in question.
