Marianne and Sophie have had enough. The two elderly ladies from Nuremberg do not feel like they are old, although both of their sons obviously want to make them old. Now the two old ladies have had enough. Fed up with their sons who bully them, Marianne and Sophie decide to go on a journey and leave everything behind. Sofie cancels her life insurance, buys a Mercedes-Benz with a caravan with her last belongings and sets off on a long journey with Marianne & her animals.

Gudrun is a teen-aged girl living in Germany during World War II. Her father is away serving in the army and her mother has sent her to a rural village to stay with her grandmother, a cafe proprietor. In that ironically idyllic setting, Gudrun frolics with a youth who yearns to join the Hitler Youth, though his father is a pastor who has been outspoken against the regime and will soon be arrested. Meanwhile, Gudrun's mother has been having an affair with an army officer. This causes grave difficulties when her husband, who has deserted and is hiding out in grannie's cellar, stumbles upon the couple.

In the idyllic Bavarian village of Himmelsheim, a peaceful existence is disrupted when the German Federal Railway plans to build a high-speed rail line through their town, necessitating a massive tunnel. The construction upheaval shakes the lives of the villagers, triggering old conflicts and new rivalries. Amidst this chaos, Toni, a spirited traveler with a video mobile, becomes entangled in a love triangle involving Petra and Jonny, a driller working on the project. While most of Himmelsheim unites against the railway, the wily winemaker and council member, Münzel, secures a solution.
