During the French Revolution, a wealthy couple lives safely by professing republican beliefs. When a mob attacks a nearby chateau an aristocrat bursts into the couple's home. They save his life by disguising him as a servant, but he soon forces his attentions on the wife. Hearing their struggle, the husband intervenes and, stripping the aristocrat of his disguise, thrusts him outdoors to be killed by the mob.

This Cinderella is up to date. She and her sister Jane receive an invitation to a reception. Jane, selfish and arrogant, is carried away with her own vanity and anticipation of making a "hit" and being the belle of the evening. Cinderella, her sister, looks at her simple and ordinary drew, which is the best of her limited wardrobe, and says she will have to wear it or stay at home. Jane says she will look like a "frump," and be out of place, anyway. Poor Cinderella decides to remain at home. Mrs. Marvin, an elderly visitor, happens into the room and Cinderella, always kind and thoughtful, makes the old lady comfortable. She is attracted to the display of Jane's finery and asks the reason. Cinderella tells her all about the reception.

Ralph Valentine, a penniless pianist, goes to Paris to pursue his career. He is attracted to two women: Pauline, the sweet and innocent daughter of his landlady, and Flora Margot, a woman of loose morals who runs with a wild crowd. Because of his irrational passion for Flora, Ralph makes a bargain with Satan, who gives him a magic skin which gratifies every wish and shrinks, along with the well-being of its possessor, in proportion to the number of wishes realized. Ralph tries in vain to rid himself of the skin after Pauline commits suicide because of his vices. Just as the devil comes to lead him into hell, Ralph awakes with the skin in his hands in an antique store where he had gone to buy a necklace for Flora.
