On the square of a village on a beautiful greek island there are two competing tavernas. One belongs to Aspasia and the other to Anargyros, who is a former Sergeant Major of the Greek Army. A poor neighborhood of Athens, Asyrmatos, is the center of the world for the people who live there and try in every way to escape from poverty and destitution. A handsome released youth, Ricos (Alekos Alexandrakis), is trying to make money, at the same time that his lover, Stefi (Aliki Georgoulis), is seeing other men and her father, Nekrophoras (Manos Katrakis), is trying to contribute in family finances. Rico will set up a job, but will spend the money raised before he can put it into action. As a result, one of his "partners" (Alekos Petsos) will commit suicide, leaving his pregnant wife, Eleni (Aleka Paizis), to her fate. Rikos, his beloved and her father, defeated and disappointed because of the expectations that were never fulfilled, will be forced to come to terms with the harsh reality.

A professor asks two poor students of law to steal, for a fee, a rare figurine from the house of a collector. After the successful outcome of the theft, the professor dies from joy, and the two students decide to return the figurine to its owner. There they meet his daughters, to whom they tell numerous lies. In the end, it is revealed that the whole thing was part of a wager between the professor and the collector, and the two students fall in love with the latter's daughters.

This film is a social comment of the times, exploring issues that centre around relationships and what was allowed and what was not allowed at the time (early 60s) in Greece. There are sub-plots also, mainly relating to the life of the poor city dwellers, social injustice and seeming double standards. Aliki Vougiouklaki is a poor young girl dreaming of a better life and the "handsome prince on a white stallion" who will deliver her from her miserable existence. She meets and falls in love with a young man (Nikos Kourkoulos) who also falls in love with her, but things are not as simple as they first seem. His past comes to haunt them with tragic consequences. Vassilis Diamantopoulos is excellent as the half-crazed old captain whose life strangely echoes that of young Aliki.

Miss Fanouria Kalafati, also known as Ritsa (Sappho Notara), is a very intelligent doorwoman, to whom everyone runs to tell them the truth and advise them on their love affairs. Of course, she interferes in their lives at every opportunity, as in the case of a singer, Zozefina, who sets her up with a middle-aged earner, Michalakis, in order to make her suitor, Sakis, jealous and stop postponing the wedding. When she realizes that her niece is in love with a young man, she rushes to grant them her wish, while she herself still loves Antonis, her youthful love who had emigrated to Australia. A lottery ticket, given to her by Michalakis, makes her rich overnight, so she buys the penthouse of the apartment building and houses her love, since Antonis returned from Australia the same way he left, that is, penniless.

A good-hearted guy, Romeos, who thinks he's a big "Kazanova", comes out of the madhouse. At the suggestion of his cousin Leon Karfis, he goes on holiday to an island where he is continuously under the watchful eye of a nurse of the madhouse, Telemachus.
