A newly established communist authorities in Yugoslavia face the moral challenge of how to deal with warriors of defeated side and other enemies of the regime.

The arrival of the young teacher Damjan in one village in western Macedonia shakes the usual daily life of its inhabitants who belong to different religions.

The film takes place in a small town where the Germans are getting ready to retreat near the end of the war. But a carload of Russian prisoners get people to feed them, then the prisoners overcome their guards and escape. The town people try to save them from the Germans but do not succeed.
