Four people. Four destinies. A dangerous secret.
The film consists of a series of tightly interlinked vignettes, the most sustained of which details the story of a man and a woman who are passionately in love. Their attempts to consummate their passion are constantly thwarted, by their families, by the Church and bourgeois society in general.
Winemaker Peter Vierkottel and his son Bartel love to talk about their wines, which Anna, Peter's wife, doesn't get off on, because she controls the family money. She wants order and to marry off her son to Binchen, the daughter of the gardener Jupp Spriestersbach. The problem is Binchen has long had her eyes on the young gardener Bock.
Jacques is a jolly bachelor who lives a wild life with his a mistress Wanda and all he wishes is to go on living the way he does. But Father won't allow. He demands that Jacques get married. More or less reluctantly, Jacques decides to comply but on the way to his father's home - where he is to meet the bride Dad has chosen for him - the young man comes across the charming Simone and falls in love with her at first sight. He elopes her, determined to ignore his progenitor's orders. Little does he know that Simone, the girl of his heart, is none other than the one he was supposed to marry...
With mixed feelings, Fritz and his young wife travel to Gut Buchholz for a visit. Their aunt’s passion is matchmaking; that’s why it’s troubling that she wasn’t consulted in this case. On the train, the young couple meets Maria Holm, their aunt’s new secretary. She was hired based on a letter of recommendation from the estate manager. They agree that Fritz’s wife will come to the estate as a secretary, while Maria will stay at a hotel for a few days. Meanwhile, the estate manager, Gottlieb, has confessed to the uncle that the secretary he recommended is actually his fiancée.
When Mister Vlasman gets promoted from baking bread to making macaroni, he and his wife want to enter high society. They could not be happier when a wealthy baron offers to introduce them into the high class. What they don't realise is that this was all an April Fools' prank. Unfortunately for the pranksters, things get out of hand when a real baron visits the Vlasmans. This film is presumed lost.
