After getting injured in a fight, the steward of the luxury steamer Honolulu Star encourages Smiling Jimmy to take over the job of the beaten stoker and waiter, in exchange for both of their wages. On the ship, he meets Mr. Irving, who is incognito, playing the role of the Archduke St. Antonio, as he wants to get to know the "underworld" from the inside. They teach each other how to avoid being exposed during their few-day adventure, and eventually, they switch roles. But the real adventure is only just beginning.

Our hero, Lajos, a drunken ex-cop in his fifties, back from the jaws of death. His old friend Feri, who is always anxious and wrestling with bad premonitions; and his wife, Etus, who believes in both the omnipotence of love and the afterlife. And, of course, there's their close friend Tibi, in his twenties, who's obsessed with paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories - especially since his parents were struck by a ball lightning bolt. The four-strong group of friends is bound together by a fascination with esotericism and spiritualism - they are joined by Etus's sister, the recently widowed Évike, who, thanks to Etus's domestic magic, is hopelessly in love with Lajos. Meanwhile, Lajos, who works as a security guard, is in deep trouble: he is granted a two-day reprieve by the underworld-connected art dealer Mr Faragó to settle his debt of millions.

"A bus came..." consists of five loosely connected sketch films; the only thing that connects them is that each one is connected in some way to a bus route in Budapest. The mini-films, which are very different in mood and style, were made by Ferenc Török (Shoes), Árpád Schilling (No Comment), Viktor Bodó (Quarter Hour), György Pálfi (Táltosman vs. Ikarus) and Kornél Mundruczó (St. John of 78) with the professional and friendly support of Miklós Jancsó, who also provided the basic idea for the film.

Helén and Jenö are waiting for a child and are desperately searching for an accomodation. They eventually sign a contract with an old lady, Szeréna, who lives in a two-family house. According to the contract, they are to pay a moderate rent and they have to take care of her until her death. After the first weeks, Szeréna accuses the couple of trying to poison her and builds a chicken coop on the balcony with the aim of living off the eggs she herself gathers.

Hungary after the changes. Jutka loses her job and even her marriage is ruined, since her husband gets involved with the daughter of an influential businessman. Jutka moves in with a female friend, Dóra likewise has to face a difficult choice.

He could make a decent marriage with Ingrid, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, but he just dishonours her and runs away. Solvejg loves her with true love and then goes into the woods to hide, but Peer continues to run away to distant foreign lands...

Through the history and relations of our star, we get acquainted with the secrets of trees' lives and those skills that enabled them to be one of the oldest living things on Earth. We examine the macro-environment and social network of the beech, we meet the creepy, crawly and flying creatures that are inseparable from the trees, we witness the many dozen defensive, competitive and cooperative strategies.
