It was the thirteenth event under the Slammiversary chronology and the first event in the 2017 Impact Wrestling PPV schedule. The event included special appearances by Impact Wrestling alums Shark Boy and James Mitchell.

This event was based around teams representing four of the most notable MMA promotions: the UFC, Pride Fighting Championships, Strikeforce and World Extreme Cagefighting. Combatants were chosen based on how closely linked their careers were to those promotions.

Strikeforce: Evolution was a mixed martial arts event to be held by the Strikeforce on December 19, 2009 in San Jose, California at the HP Pavilion at San Jose. The event aired live on Showtime in the US and live on SuperChannel in Canada.

Bobby Green was originally scheduled to face Alonzo Martinez, but had to withdraw due to an injury.

Bellator 123 was headlined by a Featherweight Championship rematch between Pat Curran and Patricio "Pitbull" Freire. The two originally met in a closely contested fight at Bellator 85 on January 17, 2013, with Curran winning the bout via split decision. The rematch was initially scheduled to take place at Bellator 121, however, it was announced on May 21, 2014 that Curran had pulled out of the bout due to a calf injury.

Strikeforce: Houston, also known as Strikeforce: Houston: King Mo vs. Feijao, was a mixed martial arts event that was held by Strikeforce on August 21, 2010 at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, United States.After Jake Shields vacated the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship, there was much speculation that there would be a tournament for the title. However, Strikeforce announced that Ronaldo Souza and Tim Kennedy would fight for the championship.André Galvão was originally scheduled to face Nate Moore, however Jorge Patino stepped in on late notice for the injured Moore.The Cormier/Riley and Galvão/Patino preliminary bouts streamed live on Sherdog.com.

The event was headlined by Heavyweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson against former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed Lawal. At the weigh ins, Emmanuel Sanchez missed the 146-pound featherweight limit, coming in at 149.5 pounds. The fight was changed to a catchweight.
