A woman is put on trial for murdering a musician who ruined her marriage.

Lamenting Thebian women are waiting for the men to come back from war. God Jupiter is attracted to one of them: Alkmene. He goes to earth and tries to seduce her as himself: an old man. Failing in this, he disguises himself as Amphitryon (Alkemene's husband) and tries again. Next morning Amphitryon and his men come back from war; he suspects adultery and wants a divorce. Jupiter's wife Juno now also comes to earth and clears things up.

The film is set during the Italian Renaissance in the 14th century. Petruccio lives in Ferrara with his wife, Fiametta. Initially, he works as a scribe at the city court. Under the pseudonym Giovanni Boccaccio, he writes amorous tales that divide opinion within the city. While the women read the texts with delight, the men are outraged by their moral licentiousness.

This 1938 film by Mario Camerini is the German version of a previously-made film by the same director. However, unlike the previous film, this one isn't quite as serious. Finally he relents but the villagers ostracize them. In the meantime Winnie Markus tries to seduce Richard Häußler who makes the life for his wife Viktoria von Ballasko a hell through his infidelities.
