Ilya Ehrenburg

Based on the novel "Trust D. E." by Ilja Ehrenburg. Jens Boot, a successful manager in a multinational corporation, organizes the takeover of companies in Europe. Very soon he realizes his task—the preparation of the destruction of Europe. He suspects his girlfriend of being involved in the conspiracy. Only in the European desert do they meet again.

In the Crimea, the Reds and the Whites aren't done fighting, and Jeanne discovers that the man she loves is a Bolshevik (when he kills her father). Penniless, she returns to Paris where she works for her uncle. Soon after, her lover Andreas is in France to organize the sailors in Toulon. So also is a thief, traitor, and libertine, Khalibiev, who wants to seduce Jeanne. His schemes, Jeanne and Andreas's naivete, and a lost diamond bring the lovers to the brink of tragedy.

This three-part Austrian/Czech comedy stretches the boundaries of what is considered to be humorous. Part one finds a silent film actor upset because of a rival actor's attention to the former's wife. When he kills his rival, it is only when he is strapped to the electric chair that he realizes that this is his last live scene. The second episode has the wife of an elderly British nobleman having an affair with the young gamekeeper of their estate. Part three finds a peasant woman taking a lover when her husband goes off to fight the war.

Home alone, little Jules starves while the people rise up and uphold their commune in the streets of Paris. His father joins the revolutionaries, taking his son, whose enthusiasm and pipe are quickly noticed by both his comrades and his enemies, which leads to an appalling ending.
