György Durst

During a film course lead by Yvette Biro at the Hungarian Academy of Drama and film in 1995, the director students were shown a black-and-white photo taken by Lucien Herve in 1952, and they were given the task of writing a short film based on it. Three women are standing at the outskirts of a village, looking out of the picture in the same direction. This six-minute one-shot film shows what the Herve photo does not.

There is the housing estate. There's Artin, a music geek with the mentality of a teenager at twenty-three, and his brother Nate, a sex-crazed porn writer on the run from hole to hole. And then there are a few other possessions: a second-hand large apartment, an inherited small apartment, and a second-hand inherited woman. But which one goes to whom?

The film's protagonist, coming out of the pub, meets Jeremiah, a stoker who sells mysterious turtles. Who is watching whom? It is not known. "Fear is not born with a person, it is an infection that can be cured."

Feri returns home after a long stay abroad. He can’t even remember how long he has been away, and he has forgotten all his past, his family, his childhood. The reason for his amnesia is his strange addiction: his dependence on sugar.

Have I committed a crime? Lamm cannot answer this question. But maybe it doesn't matter. After all, a mistake has been made, and now he can leave town. He thinks not of the chandelier, not of the look on the executioner's face in the tavern, but of the woman who slapped him the night before, the woman who now lies motionless before the wall, as still as a pebble. Is that the punishment? Lamm was pardoned. But the punishment only begins now, now, when the dead city disappears forever into the woods.

Kornél, a 20-year-old boy tries to re-integrate himself after returning from war but realizes that both he and his home have completely changed. The war did not go away without a trace.

The soccer player goes to the hospital to undergo a doping test. They call him on the phone. He hangs up the phone and enters one of the booths of the paternoster. There is already a camera in the booth...

White-clad figures in gas masks appear from time to time. They are the Program group. It is presumably the behaviour of these characters - the population - who appear in each other's strange dreams that has triggered the desire of businessmen and politicians to call in foreign help to restore order. They have come with unknown aims, and are doing their work in terror. The film is a chain of surreal dreams, yet the feeling is familiar. We are home.
