Maria Josè was the daughter of the king of Belgium and she was betrothed to Umberto di Savoia, the son of Vittorio Emanuele III, the king of Italy. The movie tells her story from her teens, when she was a Red Cross nurse during World War I until her exile in 1946.

In 1847, Milan was ruled by the Austrians, commanded by Marshal Radetzky. The Milanese people were exhausted by the lack of freedom, and when an Italian cardinal was appointed to the Milanese curia, they took to the streets in celebration, with no intention of revolt. But the celebrations were stopped by the Austrians with harsh and cruel repression.

In 1945 Ada Sereni left her three children in Palestine - where she had lived for eighteen years - and returned to Italy in serach of her husband who went missing durin the war. She immediately become involved in an underground movement Aliah Bet, which secretly organized the expatriation to the promised land of Jews who had esacped Nazi concentration camps. This is the story of how a third of Europe's surviving Jews left Italy for their new home.

Rosaria is a southerner who lives in Turin. Alone and with many sacrifices she raised three children, the youngest of whom, restless and rebellious, left home without giving any more news of himself. On the same night in which, unexpectedly, he returns to his mother, he is arrested for murder and indicted, among other things, for numerous rapes. Incarcerated with overwhelming evidence against him, it seems that there is no escape for him, also because he does not defend himself and assumes the attitude of someone who is hiding a terrible secret, thus appearing guilty in everyone's eyes. Only the mother persists in believing in his innocence, even improvising as a detective: she undertakes, once again alone, an investigative investigation in order to identify the true person responsible for the crimes and demonstrate Michele's innocence.
