Born a fully grown black man in a village in the Brazilian jungle, Macunaíma later magically transforms into a white man before making an adventure-filled trip to the city of São Paulo. Once there, he becomes something of a dandy, falling in love with Ci, a revolutionary who dies in an accidental bombing. After robbing a ruthless industrialist, Macunaima returns to his village where he finds his newly acquired knowledge and possessions of little use.

Paola, a young reporter working for a tabloid newspaper, investigates a series of mysterious murders involving suspicious companies, cryptic messages and grotesque methods. When a witness comes forward with new clues, Paola goes after the case, not realizing that she has become the killer's latest obsession.

The daily routine of a women's Republic in the late days of 1963 and early 1964 - before the military coup - is presented from the perspective of several characters, and the place's owner who is about to sell the house to an international company who wants to build a mall in the place.
