Seven-year-old Kati is glad that despite her spastic disability she is allowed to attend a normal school. Her parents made that possible. In her first year there, she is supposed to prove that she can get along at the school and she does her utmost to keep up with her classmates. Her disability, however, is greeted with constant mockery and disrespect. Even her teachers have a hard time treating her equally. When Kati fails math, she has to attend a special school. Katie is devastated but her friends help her to cope with the new situation.

Berlin during the Great Depression of 1929. Unemployed cab driver Emanuel sees no more opportunities for himself in the city and wants to try his luck somewhere outside. His friend Fritz lends him his cab for one last trip. In the process, he meets the dancing girl Susi. She is young, beautiful, carefree, self-confident and persuades him to stay. During a demonstration by the unemployed, a policeman is stabbed to death. Emanuel is suspected. He is arrested in the evening at Susi's revue. Frida and Gerda and other young people with their problems and their longing for a little security and social safety are also there.

The young shepherd Konrad wants to ask the princess to marry him. All the exhortations of the kitchen maid Anne are to no avail. With the help of a magic flute, Konrad solves all the tasks set by the king and the princess. Claudia, 13, wants to show her mother "that kids can do what they want". 13-year-old Danny thinks Germany’s lousy, having lived on the streets for two years. His mother doesn’t try to contact him any more. Jonas, 13, is convinced that a bright future lies ahead of him. He shifts between his parents’ house and the streets, but feels most at home in a street riot. 13-year-old Daniela doesn’t want to leave home, despite suffering at the violent hands of her father. We meet her in a women’s refuge centre. David, 13, shows the director, his father, first-hand what street children go through and the pain they inflict upon their parents.
