In Russia at the turn of the century, a wealthy Jewish merchant enjoys the best of relations with his Russian neighbours, while his respected home forms the obvious social centre of the entire community. However, the atmosphere grows more tense as the local authorities come under pressure to fall in line with the officially sanctioned anti-Semitic policies of the Tsarist Government. The village elder is one of our hero's best friends and together they seem to find a way to outwit these evil intentions but unfortunately they fail to understand what forces they are dealing with in a country where anti-Semitism is state policy.

The film is set in southern Georgia during Ottoman control, where inhabitants, who were driven from their homes due to enemy invasions, try to return home through different means. One of these inhabitants is the young scholar Antimoz.

The story is based on Konstantine Gamsakhurdia's novel and depicts the social and political changes taking place in Soviet Georgia in the 1930s through the line of the main characters: Tarash Emkhvari and Arzakan Zvambaya.

Khareba Jibuti, Prince Kharashvili’s right hand man becomes an outlaw after he witnesses a series of injustices. After meeting another outlaw Gogia Kenkiashvili he joins his bunch in the forest. They cause lots of trouble for the local rich thus winning the hearts and minds of poor people. Nevertheless, when captain Akhvlediani opens the hunting season on two renowned outlaws he finds a much-needed man who is ready to show him their whereabouts.
