Four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife.

A brilliant collection of beautifully animated episodes based on selected masterpieces of Japanese modern literature. The aim of this series is to appeal to the viewer at large and to give him or her some idea of the variety and individuality which Japanese literature has developed over the last hundred years. The authors range from Higuchi Ichiyou (Takekurabe), Mori Ougai (The Dancing Girl) and Natsume Souseki (Botchan) to Kawabata Yasunari (The Izu Dancer), Nobel laureate of 1968, and Mishima Yukio (The Sound of Waves).

The story began in the early summer of 1942 when 'Tatsurou' met 'Setsuko' at Karuizawa. Its love at first sight but sadly 'Setsuko' was pledged to marry a stranger by her parent. She ran away from her hometown and arrived at Tokyo in search of her love one. War erupted then and Tatsurou was summoned to service. In this documentary, script supervisor Teruyo Nogami, who first worked with Akira Kurosawa on RASHOMON, catches up with many members of the crew, including cowriter Shinobu Hashimoto and assistant director Tokuzo Tanaka. They talk about the screenplay’s evolution, difficulties during the shooting of the film, and Kurosawa’s working methods.
