Séraphine and her mother arrive in Paris to visit the 1867 World Exhibition. In an overcrowded city they must be accommodated in separate hotels. Brandenburg an der Havel, 2nd half of the 19th Century: the barber Fritz Bollmann is running his old-fashion barbershop and is well known, while another barber Jean Blank is more modern and haute-couture, who sees him as a huge competitor. When Bollmann wanted to leave to store to go fishing, what he loves, a boy asked for a haircut, but due to his anger he cuts him almost all of his hair. This leads the kids to play a trick upon him and when they through things in the lake in order for Bollmann to fall into the water while fishing, they write a mocking song about him. The song is spread all over the town, much to the hate of Bollmann himself. But he doesn't give up and is off to fight back.

Edith Gedeye, the ward of Consul Schober, wants to meet and stay with Harald, her fiancee. On the morning of her intended departure from the house, the manservant Winkelmann finds the corpse of the consul. Suspicion quickly falls on both Edith and Harald, because the Consul had a fight with Edith about Harald and Harald has been in need of some money for a long time.

The Termoehlens belong to the old farming class in Flanders. Their estate does well and their flax is the best far and wide. And as is the custom, old Termoehlen is like a ruler over his family, the servants and the maidens. Even his son Ludwig, who has just returned from agricultural school with all his ideas on how to improve the farm, doesn’t stand a chance. During the Napoleonic occupation of the German states in 1812, a tailor by the name of Anton Wibbel is sentenced to sit in jail for insulting the Emperor. The tailor manages to get out of this by paying off a friend to go to prison in his place. But then, the "phony" prisoner suddenly dies in his cell and everyone now thinks Wibbel is dead.

An entire neighborhood is in an uproar because the Maier family is keeping their prize-winning rooster, Otto, on the balcony of their apartment. And now, every morning, the rooster is waking up the entire street with its dawn greeting. Thus, the neighborhood comes up with a plan to convince the Maiers to find a new place for the rooster to live (preferably amidst a bed of potatoes and onions). The Maiers, however, aren't so enthusiastic about this plan and strictly refuse to take the rooster off the balcony. Is it thus any surprise that the next morning, Otto is found dead in his cage ... and has apparently been *gasp* murdered?!?

A respectable woman in her 50s inherits a local night club from her husband in a divorce settlement, provided that she shows up there every night at 10:00pm for a month. In spite of eny and provocation, she manages to meet the terms.
