A young woman is dumped by her boyfriend just before the wedding as she will not be inheriting any wealth from her father. When the girl's father pays her a visit, she hires a man to act like her husband.

Raghavan Thampi (Thilakan) and his wife Subhadra (Sukumari) have two sons, Prabhakaran (Nedumudi) and Pradeep (Jayaram). Prabhakaran wants to become a mridungam maestro against the wishes of his parents who want him to get married. Sumathi, a famous actress longing for a simple life, accidentally gets off a train in a remote hill village while en route to a film shoot. Caught in heavy rain, she seeks shelter at the home of Madhu, the local estate manager, who initially hesitates but eventually takes her in. As she hides her identity, a landslide cuts off train access for a week, forcing her to stay. Mistaken for Madhu’s wife by his boss, Sumathi finds herself drawn to Madhu.
