Lieutenant Glahn arrives in a small village in northern Norway. He wants to live in peace in the company of his dog. The young Edvarda stirs emotions in the lieutenant.

An American bomber is shot down on the Norwegian coast during World War II. The airmen bail out and land at different locations. In spite of the German search for them, the Norwegian resistance picks them up and hides them in the attic of the local church, a center of operations. Things become tense, however, when the hideout is spotted by a notorious collaborator, and soon the protagonist, Hans, has to get the airmen to Sweden.

This is a tale that has an epic scope in scenery "the northern snow-covered lands of coastal Norway" and is dramatized by moments of tumultuous stormy weather. But the focus is on Heikki (Stein Bjorn) a young man who is inspired by the northern lights to take a horse-drawn sled and make his way to the sea, hoping to come back with abundant fish. He is overtaken by a snowstorm and is forced to find shelter in a small, isolated cabin that is home to a half-crazy widow, her baby, and a blind man. Driven to arson by her internal demons, the woman destroys the cabin. She and the blind man perish, but Heikki manages to save the baby. He is now faced with an even greater challenge as he holds the infant and looks in the direction of the coastline.

Seamstress Katinka Stordal is a lonely and tired woman in search of love and freedom. When everyday life gets too much, she goes to Krane's pastry shop.

The little girls Kjersti and Mari are on a walk in the woods with their dog. At the same time, a thief who has stolen sheep is hunted.

After being fired as barbers, Bernt and Nils get jobs working for an employee at a large department store. They become embroiled in the rivalry between two bosses, Ålberg and Hagen, who are both competing for a prize of 5,000 kroner for the best act at the company's autumn fair. Ålberg has no scruples and resorts to both cheating and kidnapping.

An interesting look into 1931, a year of unemployment and misery in the forests of Norway. The movie is important as both film history and social portrayal. We get insight into working conditions class differences between loggers and forest owners. Based on the events of the Julussa conflict the movie depicts early labour organization, unity and strike.
