In one of the regions of Latvia occupied by the Nazis, the Germans arrest a peasant boy named Janis. His first escape ends in another arrest. This time, he is detained by his younger brother, who has become a policeman. After his next escape, his wife Ilga and daughter are sent to a concentration camp. Now Janis is ready to do anything to save them.

In northward far camp NKVD arrives echelon with the group of prisoners. Among them there are an engineer Sadovskiy and inveterate criminal Kostya, that quickly becomes the ringleader of barrack and forbids to all the appearances at work. The officials of cheka begin a persistent and tactful fight for the change of these people.

Kulak Walter's successor, Robert, calls his fellow villagers to form a collective farm. The poor peasantry of the village actively supports his call. The first collective farm of German colonists "Rote Fane" (Red Flag) is created. Local kulaks begin to fight against him. Under the influence of the kulaks' agitation, part of the middle-class colonists went to Germany. The collective farm grows and becomes stronger, and the kulaks weaken. Walter bribes his watchman, old Shakir, and incites him to kill Robert. But Shakir can't beat Robert. He exposes Walter's nefarious intentions and joins the collective farm. A letter comes from the departed colonists, reporting that there is an economic crisis and unemployment in Germany, and expressing regret for following the provocation and leaving the Soviet Union.

The last and only surviving silent film by director and actor Yevgeny Chervyakov. The film adaptation is distinguished by the accuracy of the psychological characteristics of the numerous characters (Chervyakov himself played the episodic role of an officer magnificently), the detail of everyday sketches of life in Germany and Russia, and the conveyance of the atmosphere of the events of the First World War and the Civil War. Parts 3 and 5 of the film have been lost.

On the detention of fascist saboteurs and border violators by the collective farmers of Soviet Byelorussia. The main heroine, the actual "daughter of the Motherland", is the chairman of the kolkhoz, and has detained eight trespassers. But the main enemy may be lurking from within the borders.
