FRAGMENT | Solicitor von Ramm lives alone with his little daughter, whom he had with his teenage sweetheart Klara. At a party, he randomly encounters Klara, who has since married the talented pulmologist von Esmarck. Ramm gives into Klara’s desire to see their child again, and the love between them is suddenly rekindled. When the child falls ill, Ramm has to beg Dr. von Esmarck to help, and he finally relents only when Klara reveals that the child is hers. However, von Esmarck is wrongfully convicted of the murder of his old uncle, and Ramm must act as prosecutor against the doctor who just saved his child’s life. The plan is to get Willy drunk, make him accept a loan from the pub landlord and sign a receipt which is actually a blank contract committing him to service on board a ship. Hugo suffers a sudden fit of weakness, and the doctor’s orders for absolute rest make Robert confess in order to protect his brother. He only just manages to reveal the truth to his mother before he is thrown out of the family home. When the brothers meet again after four long years, they do so on Peele Island under the rays of a flashing beacon. A ravaging epidemic is fast approaching the world city of Atlantica. In his laboratory, the famous doctor Harold Lister works like a maniac on a serum to counteract the deadly plague. His colleague and competitor Whistler labels Lister’s efforts as pure fantasies and even plants seeds of doubt in the mind of Lister’s fiancée, Julia, the daughter of a millionaire. When the plague comes to town carried by a poor woman, Annie Rawlins, Whistler’s claims are put to shame: the serum works. But while Lister works tirelessly to stop the infection in the city, the jealous Whistler breaks into the laboratory and substitutes the serum for a fake. Proprietor Madsen is trying to charm the kitchen maid, Stine, and gives her a lottery ticket for Christmas. If she is lucky, she will win the most beautiful farm in the country, so Madsen writes down the number of the lottery ticket and keeps a watchful eye on the lucky numbers. Draw by draw is made public, but the ticket does not win, and Stine grows impatient. So when the farmhand Klaus offers to buy the ticket, Stine sells. The next drawing brings Klaus the win and Stine now has a problem with Madsen, who had planned to get his hands on both her and the big prize. (Stumfilm.dk).
There’s an uproar in the small fishing village, as the greedy businessman Consul Warming forces the fishermen to work both day and night.
