A seemingly ordinary day in October. A woman has since she separated from her husband lived in a single room with a separate entrance. But for her this is not an ordinary day. She only has six hours left to live.

In the mid-1920s, four young men and women have decided to spend their summer holiday studying together and have rented a wonderful house in the Swedish archipelago. Rationally, they realize that this cohabitation may lead to some of the members being attracted to one another. Thus, in order to avoid unnecessary passions, conflicts, jealousy, grief and enmity, the women sleep in a separate house on the other side of the creek. In spite of believing that they are prepared for anything, and even though they share the task of cooking, their feelings get carried away.

Mona and Egil have grown up with a jumble of parents and stepparents. Now they have a total of three pairs of parents. Mona gets pregnant, and all her parents want her to get married. During the engagement party, the parents cheat on each other one by one, which leads to Mona escaping with her fiancé. They decide not to get married. The parents travel to Copenhagen to look for the escaped young people.

General director Strøm will create a large Norwegian industrial company to tame waterfalls and put them in pipes. But also his wife Sylvia, the gifted pianist, must be tamed. However, Strøm discovers that human material is considerably more difficult to process than the forces of nature.

When the airline captain Curt Åhs comes home one day he discovers that his wife is unfaithful. Later he and the flight attendant Berit shares an adventure together during a flight to Rio De Janeiro.

Eight young people decide to detach themselves from all moral prejudices in their love life. They travel to an idyllic island in the archipelago. A paradise is founded, based on a thesis that the great love is no more. Eroticism is their choice. The friends is strongly influenced by the ideas of Sigmund Freud.

Knut Holmen turns 40, and celebrates by searching for his youth.
