Biography
Born in Vila do Conde (Portugal) 1983. Based in Berlin. Pedro Maia is a Portuguese filmmaker that works predominantly with 16mm and 8mm film, pushing the boundaries and aesthetic of analogue cinema by manipulating the raw materials and challenging the traditional process, continually expanding the visual and technological heritage of classic film methods. His films have been presented in several film festivals and galleries, such as Tokyo Contemporary Art Museum, Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimental Art, MACBA Barcelona, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Mostra São Paulo, Curtas Vila do Conde, Indie Lisboa, amongst others. He has presented solo performances as well collaborations with several musicians such as Vessel, Shackleton, Visionist, Shapednoise, Jacaszek, Shxcxchcxsh, Tropic of Cancer, Craig Leon, Lee Ranaldo, Fennesz, Porto Remix Ensemble, Nisennenmondai, with presentations of these in leading festivals like Sonar, Unsound, Berlin Atonal, All Tomorrow’s Party, Mutek, Dekmantel, TaicoClub Japan, Red Bull Music Academy, as well in renowned institutions like The Barbican, Serralves Museum, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Eye Film Museum, Contemporary Cultural Center of Valencia, Caixa Forum Barcelona, among others.
Known For

Jorge, a very shy young man, works as bellboy in a Lisbon hotel and lives in a guesthouse where he is constantly harassed by the owner’s daughter. As he tries to resist her charms, the boy dreams of one thing only: to incarnate the singer Tony de Matos. This obsession leads him to sign up for an unique karaoke contest, where he will finally be able to give life to his longtime hero. And it’s amid a group of strange characters that Jorge will understand that, after all, he is not alone.

Memory is a collaboration with musician Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), exploring the relationship between a musician and filmmaker and their personal reflection on memories. From Super 8 home movies and entirely handmade, this film explores familiar memories, the present moment combined with past experiences and how it all seems to evade from our present memory.

It alludes to the idea that while time moves forward, bringing change and advancements with it, it also moves backwards, erasing the potential for new experiences. Pedro Maia experiments with the use of automatic learning algorithms to create a replica of the past.
