1983 — A young biologist returns home from studies abroad and feels something wrong with his body. This is the start of the AIDS crisis when the first wave of the epidemic hit Brazil. Lives will change, friends will be lost and the future is uncertain.

The painter Lauro seems to have a good life: he lives with his beloved wife Erika, and is successful working with art. However, he is not happy. One day, Lauro runs into Theo, a friend he hasn't seen in years. Both have already been in love with the same girl, Clara, who no longer lives in the city. It doesn't take long for the two to start remembering them as stories from the past, while taking a long walk through the streets of Vitória.

André, a teenager, lives in an industrial town in Brazil near an old aluminum factory. One day, a factory worker, Cristiano, suffers an accident. Creating a national park in the Brazilian state of Piauí dedicated to the preservation of what are apparently the first traces of human activity in the Americas has been archeologist Niède Guidon’s life work. SERTÃO, AMÉRICA is a contemporary take on a mythical territory of Brazilian cinema, once the cinematic realm of Glauber Rocha and other giants. The film pays a brief visit to the region, which is rendered in appropriately fragile analogue textures and deteriorated colours, as small fragments of the biographies of those who used to live there hover over the animal noises of the delicately crafted soundscape.

Ramon Alvarado is one of the most important figures of the 60s Amateur Cinema Cycle in Espírito Santo. Not only was Alvarado a prolific director of short films throughout his life, but he was also involved as the director of photography on many other important Espírito Santo film productions. Director and editor Vitor Graize brings forth archival images to add deeper layers of meaning to Alvarado’s recollections.
