Jean is a family man and factory worker who dreams of becoming a songwriter. Pinning his hopes on his teenage daughter, Marva, he takes her to singing contests in which the awkward and overweight girl struggles to belt out a tune. When Jean is suddenly fired because of cut backs, he is ashamed and even more desperate to have his daughter succeed. In a chance meeting Jean kidnaps the most famous pop star in the country and holds her hostage demanding to be heard by the music industry. Catching the attention of the media and the eyes of the nation, Jean and Marva realize that the show must go on until everyone is famous.

The smart but naughty farmhands son's eternal mischief, pranks and disobedience drive his elders (especially teachers, family and father's grumpy employer, a rich farmer, but also neighbors and even the kind curate whose liturgical server he is) and classmates to despair in a time when a boy's punishment was still inevitable, swift and often severe; thus when his mother catches him skinny dipping she takes all his clothes home, forcing him to a long walk of shame, dreading dad's wrath all the way. This version also stresses the story's social and Flamingant aspects.

Grocer De Feyter is put out of business by competition from a supermarket run by the Moroccan Saïd. To keep afloat, he does the dirty work for a right-wing politician. This man is in cahoots with a project developer who wants to build a furniture superstore in the slum area. With the aid of criminals, they manage to bring racial tension in the area to boiling point. Against this background, affection blossoms between the daughter of the grocer and the son of Saïd, a real Romeo and Juliet. Then a group of skinheads decides to put an end to the fragile romance with violence.
