Malhação is a Brazilian television series for the teenage audience. The soap started in 1995, and was set in a fictional Gym Club called Malhação on Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Through the years the location varied slightly. Although the name of the soap remains the same, it is now set in the Múltipla Escolha High School.

In the tiny poor town of Asa Branca, in the middle of Brazilian Northeast, Roque Santeiro is worshiped as a saint. He was supposedly killed by a bandit, 18 years ago, trying to save the local church. After his disappearance, local leaderships such as landowner Sinhozinho Malta and mayor Florindo, took profit on that to control the humble population. They even make up a widow, Porcina, who should have married Roque secretly before his death. What they don't expect is that Roque is alive, and he's back to, allegedly, "save his people". Now Malta, Florindo, Porcina, and others must hold him down and explain the "truth" to their commoners, in a desperate attempt to save their own bottoms. Meanwhile, mysterious facts surround Asa Branca, such as a Werewolf, a film crew who are trying to shoot a movie about Roque's story, and violent murderers.

The main plot revolves around a hidden treasure. The story begins when a gang steals ten million dollars worth of diamonds in Uruguay. To escape the police, one of the thieves, Rodolfo Torres de Almeida, flees to Argentina. His partner, Ivo Simeone, travels to São Paulo with the jewels. Ivo decides to hide the precious stones and, to ensure he doesn't forget the hiding place, has a map tattooed above the buttocks of a girl, the daughter of his neighbor. The thief takes care to photograph the girl so he can identify her in the future. Ivo is arrested and, eight years later, when he gets out of jail, he is run over and killed. Before dying, however, he manages to tell his son Rodrigo the secret about the treasure map. The young man follows the clues given by his father and discovers that the young woman with the tattooed map is Elisa, a novice nun cloistered in a convent, about to take perpetual vows.

Casseta & Planeta is a Brazilian group of comedians who run a TV show named Casseta & Planeta Urgente, broadcast by Rede Globo. The humour featured on the show is mostly satirical, relating to religious or ethical groups, and minorities. The group founded a company called Toviassu Produções Artísticas, whose name is an acronym composed of syllables from the phrase "Todo viado é surdo" – "Every gay is deaf"; which is the ending of a widely known Brazilian practical joke. Each one of the seven members has a specific function within the company. They present their TV show at Rede Globo and publish a website and many books, among other products, for example the "Machobol". Originally a magazine named Casseta Popular and a humour newspaper called O Planeta Diário, the two teams joined forces and were hired by Rede Globo to become writers for the network's comedy shows, starting with TV Pirata in 1988. The soap opera's central theme is life after death, inspired by the philosophy of Allan Kardec, the codifier of Spiritism. The character who drives the plot is Alexandre, a delinquent who kills himself in prison after being convicted of robbery followed by homicide and goes on to torment the lives of all those he considers responsible for his tragic fate.

The whole story develops from the doctor Martha, who has worked for 40 years, always at the same clinic in Rio de Janeiro. She knows Cris and realizes that she has found a successor. Then begins the friendship of the two, who try to practice their profession with the utmost ethics, despite the owner of the clinic, who is always trying to say, save.

The synopsis was loosely inspired by an argument by Paulo José called Cidade das Formigas. It was based on what happened in the city of Formiga, in Minas Gerais, where women work for large clothing manufacturers in the country. In Formiga Real, women guarantee a large part of their families' livelihood with this work.
