Biography

Peter Salmon is a British television producer and executive. He is Chief Creative Officer of global content creator, producer and distributor Endemol Shine Group, leading the company’s creative direction globally and overseeing the Group’s UK business. Prior to taking his current role in April 2016, Salmon was Director of BBC Studios, the corporation's production arm, and before that held a number of senior BBC roles including Chief Creative Officer of BBC Vision, effectively overseeing all of BBC television's in-house programme production, and Director of BBC North.

Through case studies of citizens in different countries, the film explores a range of factors that have led to the present crisis, economic and identity challenges across Europe. High-level experts analyse how and why things are going so wrong. The film includes fictional scenes, set in a post-EU future, which feature archaeologist Charles Granda (played by Angus Deayton) travelling on a flight through a menacing storm, explaining to a child passenger what the EU was. Sombre, thought-provoking and witty, the film frames Europe through the eyes of those who have most at stake - the Europeans themselves.

Film poem by Tony Harrison which takes the figure of the Gorgon as a metaphor for the "freedom-fixing politics" which have been responsible for so much conflict this century. It starts in 1992 Frankfurt where Harrison speaks through the mouth of the statue of the German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine. At Corfu in Greece he tells of the link between Heine, the Greek Gorgon and Kaiser Wilhelm II.
