A devout upper-class Hindu has a vision in a dream that his daughter-in-law is the human incarnation of the Goddess Kali and begins worshipping her.

Bimal is a taxi-driver in a small provincial town. He lives alone, his taxi (an old 1920 Chevrolet jalopy which he named Jagaddal) is his only companion and, although very battered, it is the apple of Bimal's eye.

Prem, a young school teacher, is arranged married and begins the journey of learning the roles and responsibilities required of him.

Ram Mohan (Dev Anand) an honest lawyer is in love with Janaki (Kalpana Kartik) the beautiful daughter of Din Dayal. Din Dayal accepts the marriage proposal. Kuber Das (K N Singh), a rich businessman has a lustful eye over Janaki. In order to marry Janaki he devises a wicked plan.

Visual images consist entirely of Indian miniature paintings, while an off-screen narrator traces the rise of this art form within the courts of Akbar (1542-1605), who united what is now India and Pakistan, and his son Jahangir (1569-1627). Two schools of the miniature paintings, done by anonymous artists, flourished after Akbar established unity and peace across what had been many smaller states: the Moghul (Islamic) school and the Rajput (Hindu) school. The Moghul paintings record the events of the court, while the Rajput school connects physical beauty and, in particular, the longing of women to the transcendent values of the spirit.

This is a story about a landlord in a local rural Bengal. He is very stubborn, egoist, commanding person. Every steps of his move has logical conclusions, with reasons and vision. He doesn't want to commit himself for any cause. But Jayanta doesn't always agree with landlord's decisions. He is very honest, sincere and whimsical person who doesn't know how to plan a work. He likes a girl from his early days and always wants to marry that girl. So he conveys his wish to the father of that girl. After a small hesitation, the landlord also agrees with his wife and nods for the approval. But after the marriage takes place, a long time mystery breaks out. As a result Jayanta has to suffer, but at last the landlord rescues him.
