Lt. Franta Slama is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who is assigned to train a promising young flier, Karel Vojtisek, and they soon become friends. When Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia in 1939, they both reject the authority of their new leaders and escape to England where they join other Czech exiles in the RAF. While flying a mission over England, Karel crash lands and happens upon the farmhouse of Susan, a young woman whose husband is in the Navy. Karel soon falls head over heels for Susan but, while they enjoy a brief fling, in time Susan decides she prefers the company of the older and more worldly Franta. As Franta and Karel struggle to maintain their friendship despite their romantic rivalry.

Libor is a teenager who, in a matter of minutes, finds himself transported from the exclusive world of today's wealthy elite, with its opulent villas, snobbish parties, expensive private schools, and chauffeur-driven cars, into a situation where he must fight for his life. In the course of the plot, the strained relationships between the three adults - the alcoholic Dr. Koníček, the head nurse and the young nurse Pipka - are revealed, all burdened with various resentments, false illusions and disappointed hopes. Despite all the conflicts, and as if by a miracle, there is a kind moment of extraordinary emotional understanding at the end, and Nicholas finally appears in the hospital.

The drama of the hostages lasts one night and two days, during which a series of dramatic situations unfold. The plot takes us into the attractive world of high politics and the homes of ordinary people who are directly affected by the hijacking. Gradually, the film's fundamental question comes to the fore: Is it possible to resort to extreme measures, i.e., violence, in order to achieve environmental goals? Is it possible to achieve a cause that benefits everyone through terrorism?
