Leim, the carpenter’s journeyman, invests his lottery winnings wisely and marries his master Hoblmann’s daughter Pepi, securing a comfortable middle-class life. Zwirn, the tailor, falls for the alluring Signora Palpiti and lavishes his newfound wealth on her, rapidly depleting his fortune. Knieriem, the stout shoemaker’s apprentice, spends his windfall on endless drinking and revelry, embracing the carefree life without regrets.
A carpenter’s apprentice, Spaan (‘Chip’), has been thrown out by his master for being romantically involved with his daughter, Ernestine. On the road, he meets the slender tailor’s apprentice Naal (‘Needle’) and the drunken shoemaker’s apprentice Syl (Awl), and the three form a warm friendship. One day, they are lucky to win a large sum of money in the lottery, after which they go their separate ways with the promise of meeting up again one year later. Leim marries his master’s daughter, Zwirn squanders his fortune on the glamorous Signora Palpiti, and Knieriem drinks away his wealth. Horrified, Leim strives to rescue his friends and restore their middle‐class lives.
The fairies Fortuna and Amorosa make a bet with the devil, in the form of the evil spirit Lumpacivagabundus. They don't believe he will succeed in winning humanity over. To prove his skills, they choose three journeymen: the shoemaker Knierim, the tailor Zwirn, and the carpenter Leim. If Lumpacivagabundus succeeds in leading even one of the three journeymen astray, he will have won his bet. The devil manipulates a lottery in which the three journeymen win a fortune...
Titus is unlucky in life. His handicap is his red hair, which prevents him from finding a job. He ends up in a brewery, where he claims to be the son of the owner. He is exiled under humiliating circumstances and ends up in a castle, where he starts a game of substitutions, which is materialized in disguises in various wigs. These wigs also allow Titus to rise socially, leading to a comical denouement...
The fairy Fortuna and the ghost Lumpazivagabundus argue about whether money determines whether people act for good or for evil. So they make a bet – and shortly thereafter, the three less-than-virtuous journeymen Knieriem, Zwirn, and Leim are able to celebrate a large lottery win.
