Set between the two World Wars and based on true historical events, Bitter Harvest conveys the untold story of the Holodomor, the genocidal famine engineered by the tyrant Joseph Stalin. A poetic psychological drama about the adolescence of the Ukrainian-Russian writer Nikolai Gogol filmed for Soviet television at A. Dovzhenko Film Studion in 1988. Based on the short story "Gogol-gimnazist" by Vasili Avenarius.

The script was based on the memoirs of Soviet dissidents who faced the brutality of a totalitarian system that used so-called "punitive psychiatry" as a weapon against free thought.
