Young Father Giulio returns to Rome, where he was born and raised, to replace a priest who has left the clergy to start a family. Director Maurizio Nichetti is invited on TV to introduce a screening of his neo-realist classic 'The Icicle Thief'. He is horrified to discover that his black-and-white tale of life in poverty is constantly interrupted by garish color commercials, and even more horrified when a power cut in the studio causes film and commercials to mix up – a glamorous model finds herself in the arms of an unemployed pauper, while his wife finds herself in consumers' heaven. Nichetti has to break into the film to try to sort everything out.

Among the many odd jobs Matilda, a provincial girl, takes on to make ends meet is playing the role of a princess in historical costume reenactments. But when she finds herself pregnant, her boyfriend Pietro refuses to take any responsibility. Matilda then decides to have an abortion, with the help and support of her friend Anna, a fashionable painter who sees her as a reflection of herself. And thanks to Anna, she also comes into contact with Andrea, a wealthy young man whose family boasts noble origins. As if by fate, the role she plays in the reenactments begins to come in handy in a new, far more engaging fiction.
