This hilarious, grotesque, and unique adult animated feature chronicles visual artists Seth Scriver and Shayne Ehman’s trans-Canadian road trip as they encounter dull violence, rampant consumerism and unbridled eccentricity in small towns all over this wide, weird country.

An informal look into the personalities and frenzy behind the second edition of the NFB Animation Hothouse. The six Hothouse filmmakers and their NFB collaborators comment on the nature of auteur animation, the place and role of the NFB in that world and the excitement and fear of making a first professional film.

The OIAF’s contribution to Nuit Blanche Ottawa is Hello Amiga by the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS). TAIS commissioned six Canadian artists – Alex McLeod, Amy Lockhart, Barry Doupé, Daniel Barrow, Lorna Mills & Mark Pellegrino – to create animations by exploring Amiga computers. These machines were popularized for graphics and image generation in the 1980s and early 1990s. The artists have created captivating works that promote necessary critical discourse around animation, ponder the history of recent technologies and embrace new manipulations of old processes.

Spectacle is proud to present HEAD SPACE, a showcase of animated works exploring dimensions both interior and outlying. Featuring an extremely talented and creative group working in a diverse array of styles, the shorts wander through strange and sometimes sketchy landscapes, including alternate-universe appliance stores, the ramblings of Charles Manson, environmental catastrophes in the Dutch style of painting, and a houseplant’s musings. Some, like Sally Cruikshank’s Make Me Psychic, are established classics; others feature newer animators working in looping GIF format, presented away from the small screen’s momentary pleasures to fully appreciate the art that it is. Occasionally gross, often beautiful, and always interesting, HEAD SPACE is a sampler of the thoughts happening inside and out of each frame.

An “epic” adventure and a magical environmental fairy tale. Amy Lockhart uses cutouts, drawings and collage (captured and manipulated as digital multi-plane animation) to conjure up her whimsical world. This film was made as part of the second edition of the NFB's Hothouse apprenticeship.

A colourful tripped out animated landscape filled with catchy songs, eyeball kicks, goofball characters, and a great variety of babies. This 16mm film was created using over 1,000 hand painted cut-outs and paper puppets with paper backgrounds.
