An assassination attempt is made on the life of Paul I, the infant King of Veseria, by Stefan, a henchman of Pavlovitch, the Regent, who wishes to take over the kingdom. Paul's bodyguard, Dimitri, foils the plot, but Pavovitch is told the attempt was successful and proclaims himself King. Dimitri takes the boy king to England to the home of his rightful father, Paul Verdayne. Twenty years passes, and Pavovitch finds himself the ruler or a bankrupt and rebellious country. To save her father's throne, Opal, his daughter consents to becoming the bride of the Prince of Argone, an elderly man with a bad reputation.

After Ludwig's departure, Katrina overhears the plotting of two spies and with the help of her brother Roalf, she confronts them. In the ensuing struggle, Katrina kills one of them, who turns out to be the Austranian ambassador. Although Katrina admits her crime, Marshal von Trump plans to execute Roalf in order to pacify the Austranians. Katrina appeals to Ludwig, who pardons Roalf over the advice of his counselors causing Austrania to declare war. A crucial battle is fought near the Ardelheim inn, during which Katrina becomes a heroine by signaling the advance of Ludwig's troops.

Bartender Billy Holliday loses his job for refusing to supply drinks to minors at the behest of his employer. In the little country town he wanders into looking for work he finds two elements, the wets and the drys. When he meets the daughter of the leader of the drys, he casts in his lot with them, and when the leader of the wet faction threatens vengeance, Billy is instantly on the job. At a meeting of prohibitionists, which the brewery element seeks to disrupt by the introduction of a number of roughnecks, Holliday takes the platform and nullifies their efforts with a fiery speech. He finally succeeds in putting the wet element out of business--and in winning the love of Edith Jason.

John Masters leaves his lumber mining camp when he is summoned East by his dying father, a political boss who wishes to turn over the position he has won. The father dies and leaves his son papers that could convict the rest of his gang of henchmen. John falls in love with Frances, the daughter of Armitage, another politician. Frances is not interested in John, but marries him to save her father from exposure. The gang tries to get the papers away from John, who has taken his wife back to the woods. When John exposes the crooked politicians, including his own father, he wins Frances' respect and love. John staves off the revengeful ward gangsters with a single gun until Frances rounds up the other lumberjacks who come to his rescue.

As the love-struck young man is romancing his sweetheart, Lady Roxenham suddenly arrives, alienating Betty and throwing Ted into a panic. Lady Roxenham agrees to participate in the deception, but later Ted spies her breaking into the major's safe. After he alerts the household, she and the butler are revealed as notorious thieves. As the dust settles Ted and Betty confirm their love for each other.

Shark Rawley is a sailor aboard the tramp steamer Aurora , presided over by a brutal captain named Sanchez. While ashore one night, Shark and Sanchez encounter society girl Doris Selby and her friends on a slumming expedition at a dockside bar called the Wine Room. Entrapped by some of the predatory characters that infest the place, Doris escapes through a cellar only to abducted by Sanchez who then takes her to the Aurora.

Mabel Bannister, the daughter of Richard Bannister, visits the wealthy Cardews at Ripley Manor and falls in love with young Jack Cardew, the son of the Bishop of Ripley, Lord John Cardew. Jack asks Mabel to marry him and Jack's stepmother Lady Hester approves, but the bishop doesn't because he knows nothing about Mabel's family. The family invites Mabel and her parents to dinner at the manor to get acquainted--but it turns out that few people in both families are quite what they appear to be, and each side has secrets that they don't want the other to find out.

Harry Caton, a popular New York musical-comedy star, loses his voice on stage and then journeys to a small town on the New England coast to recuperate. Here Harry meets the beautiful Nancy Potter when he defends her against the drunken advances of Silas Jones, her father's friend. Although his daughter believes that he is a fisherman, Cail Potter is actually a thief, robbing houses along the coast with Silas as his accomplice. When Cail robs the wealthy Col. Brett's home, he finds an old miniature of a woman who exactly resembles Nancy, whom Cail rescued from a wrecked boat when she was just a year old. Soon after the robbery, Harry learns that the police are about to raid Cail's house, but Silas knocks him unconscious when he attempts to warn Nancy.

This elaborate and well-staged silent version of Hertz' play is exceedingly well produced for 1913: it starts off by introducing the actors by name and role, then showing them in double exposure in street clothes and in costumes. The production values are also elaborate and the look of the set designs reminds one of the elaborate backdrops that Melies used in his shots.

Rozika is a Hungarian girl who can sing quite nice. She goes to the place known as the United States with her brother whose name happens to be Young Carl. Rozika marries a chap named Trevor and a predicament ensued after the Great War comes knocking at the door.

A young girl, Anemone, who lives with her Aunt is abducted by a crude family of Virginia mountain moonshiners. A fight between two of the young male relatives decides who will marry the girl. Lancer is the winner and marries Anemone against her will. She is reunited some time later with her Aunt, but when she learns Lancer is in dire trouble she returns and stays by his side, realizing she had always been in love with him.

Later on, the heroine falls in love with a handsome attorney named Gambier (James Kirkwood), only to be disillusioned when she catches the attorney and the stepmother in a warm embrace.
