In Crimea, Ukraine, in 1942, the tide of war seems to be turning, and the Red Army, which had been on the verge of defeat, is gradually gaining ground against the Wehrmacht, which is now in retreat. Then a lieutenant who has escaped from German forced labor, and who according to Stalin's orders should be shot as a traitor, reports on a German secret weapon located close to the front line. A special commando unit, consisting of comrades of the condemned man, investigates and finds children believed to be dead.

The scouts of Lieutenant Besfamilny's platoon receive a task - to check information about the Nazis' secret bunker. They successfully cross the front line, but then everything does not go as planned.

They are all very different, members of this "communal dormitory": the intelligent Vera and the philistine Larisa, old-age pensioners who live their lives, and the invalid Lyra, who dreams of a happy life in faraway Australia, the soulless clerk Bozhok and the young scientist Victor, forced to look for tutoring . However, their fates are inextricably linked with events and difficult collisions taking place in the country, with a sense of instability, fear, anxious expectation: something must happen.
