Getsel, a wandering Purim player, comes to a Galica village and gets a job with Reb Nuchem, the shoemaker. He falls in love with Esther, the shoemaker's daughter, but knows she is in love with a wandering circus player. However, Getzel is content in his work and dreams. Esther's father inherits a fortune and attempts to marry her to a man of his choice, but she flees with Getzel to Warsaw, where he meets and marries the circus player. Getzel returns to the village and is blamed for Esther's disappearance until she shows up and explains what happened. Getzel shoulders his pack and wanders on to another village.

Marysia, a postal clerk, travels to Vienna to work as Mr. Olszewicz's secretary as a result of a distorted telegram. Their first joint venture is to sign a contract with American industrialist Smith, pretending to be a young married couple. He takes them to his yacht in Dubrovnik, where he refuses to sign the contract, having guessed the deception and feeling cheated.

Franka, a Warsaw prostitute, is wounded with a knife by a pimp. She ends up in the hospital, where the doctor caring for her, who wants to help her break with her past, offers her a job as a maid in the countryside. Desiring to forget the torments of her past life, the girl agrees. In the countryside she meets Pawel, a simple country boy whom she seduces. The infatuated Pawel, to whom Franka reveals her past, marries her. However, the monotonous rural life bores Franka, longing for a big-city life, and when Pawel leaves for a few days, she escapes with a man she meets casually to Warsaw, where she leads the life of a cabaret chansonist. After a few years she returns, bringing with her an illegitimate child. Pawel forgives her and takes her back under his roof. But this is not the end of Pawel's ordeal....
